Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry – advancing agriculture, horticulture and forestry for the benefit of all New Zealanders
- Provide the Government and the rural sectors with information, analysis and advice on agricultural and forestry issues.
- Work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to help win access to overseas markets for New Zealand product. We do much of the thinking behind this country’s representation in international organisations such as the World Trade Organisation and the OECD.
- Set the rules that ensure New Zealand’s food products are safe to eat. We then stamp our guarantee on export product so that overseas consumers can choose Kiwi-made food with confidence.
- Protect New Zealand’s farms and wildlife from imported pests and diseases. They work to minimise the number of foreign pests and diseases entering New Zealand, and if they do, they either eradicate them or minimise the damage caused.
- Manage Government-owned forests.
- Support rural communities with initiatives such as co-ordinating drought relief and improving telecommunications access.
- Ensure animals are treated humanely. And we encourage sustainable “environmentally friendly” farming and growing practices.

Forest Industry Engineering Association
The Forest Industry Engineering Association (FIEA) is an independent non-profit association founded in 1971. It encourages the adoption of new technologies by wood processing and manufacturing companies.
Since expanding in 1998, FIEA has developed a wide range of new programmes and developed new training and troubleshooting resources. These are being used by a large number of companies throughout New Zealand and Australia to improve their profitability.
FIEA continues to grow rapidly as the main provider of independent information on new processing and products technologies and a networking agency for the forest products industries in Australasia. We run a full calendar of technical events including conferences seminars, workshops and on-site technology assessments. Regional evening meetings and site visits to new processing operations compliment these programmes in New Zealand.

New Zealand Institute of Forestry
An organisation with a proud history, the New Zealand Institute of Forestry was founded in 1927 to provide a forum where those involved in forest management, utilisation, research and consulting could exchange ideas and information and keep up to date with industry trends.
As well as the stimulus of debate and the fellowship of colleagues, the Institute encourages the highest standards of ethical and professional performance amongst its members. Today this role is even more vital in an industry that has continued to evolve and grow almost beyond recognition since its earliest days.
